Men's Water Polo Drops Two to Open 2023 Campaign

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Austin College men's water polo team opened up the season against strong competition on Saturday, taking on NCAA Division II program Biola in the first game of the day and then taking on NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara, currently ranked No. 11 in the country. The 'Roos fell 22-8 against Biola, and 30-7 to UCSB.

The 'Roos fell behind 7-1 in the opening quarter against Biola, with Anthony Sury tallying for both his first collegiate goal and the first of the season for Austin College. The 'Roos narrowed the gap in the second period, out-scoring Biola 3-2 in the frame behind scores from Dylan McArthur, Sury, and Aidan Wade to head into halftime trailing 9-4. Biola responded with eight goals in the third to surge ahead 17-6, with Austin College getting goals from Sury and Jack Stack in the period, and Stack would notch the last goal of the game for the 'Roos in the fourth. Alan Rosenberg had 10 saves in goal for Austin College in the defeat.

Against UC Santa Barbara, the 'Roos came out strong and found themselves even at four goals apiece midway through the opening quarter, but UCSB closed the period with four unanswered tallies and would outscore Austin College 10-1 in the second to take an 18-5 lead into halftime. The margin would eventually grow to 24-7 after the third, and UCSB scored the final six goals of the game in the fourth to make it a 30-7 final. Stack and Sury each scored twice in the game, while Wade, Nikolas Koelzer, and Gabriel Daniels each found the back of the cage once. Rosenberg had six saves for Austin College in the loss.
