'Roos Cruise Past Carthage in CWPA Quarterfinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Austin College women's water polo team opened its CWPA Division III title defense in emphatic fashion on Thursday, crushing Carthage College 20-1 in the tournament quarterfinals. The 'Roos are now 11-7 overall on the year and remain unbeaten against CWPA opponents as they head into tomorrow's semifinal game against Macalester.

The 'Roos took control early with a goal from Madison Taylor opening up a 6-0 first quarter, and after Carthage tallied to open the second period the 'Roos would close the game on a 14-0 run. Sophie Oliver scored twice in the first quarter, with Shannon Berry, Brooke Le, and Aubrey Pasky each adding a goal. Le found the back of the cage twice in the second quater as Austin College went into halftime leading 10-1, with Lexi Wong and Cory McGrath each chipping in a score in the frame.

The game was 14-1 through three quarters, with Wong scoring for the second time while Oliver added her third goal of the game, and McGrath also tallied her second score in the contest. Presley Woods also got on the scoresheet in the quarter, and would add another goal in the fourth quarter as the 'Roos put six more shots into the cage in the final period. Alyssa Ross and Maddie Jacks also added scores, while McGrath found the net twice and Le scored for the fourth time.

The 'Roos will take on Macalester at 12:40 p.m. Eastern tomorrow, after having swept the two previous meetings between the schools by a combined score of 33-9.
