'Roos Drop Home Match to Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's soccer team surrendered a pair of early goals coming off of corner kicks, but the 'Roos played a strong defensive game the rest of the way to keep things close in a 2-0 defeat against Southwestern University on Friday evening. The 'Roos are now 0-13-1 overall and 0-11 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Pirates got on the board in the 15th minute of action, when Lilly Van Meter headed home a corner kick from Laren Gradt to make it 1-0, and 90 seconds later Southwestern struck again off of another corner by Gradt, this time with Devin Cybulski knocking it home to make it 2-0. That remained the score for the remainder of the opening half, as Southwestern held a 17-0 shot advantage while Kenedie Lane made seven first half saves for Austin College.

Austin College came out strong in the second half, turning away the Pirates repeatedly, as Lane made five more saves and the 'Roos blocked numerous attempts from Southwestern inside the box to keep the game at 2-0. Austin College got its best chance at a goal midway through the period, but Johnna Campbell just managed to get a hand on Shelby Smith's free kick from 45 yards out as it curled toward the upper left corner of the goal. Southwestern finished the match with a 36-2 edge in shot attempts, with Lane making 12 saves compared to one for Campbell in Southwestern's net.

The 'Roos are back in action on Sunday, when they host Texas Lutheran at noon.
