Women's Hoops Topped by No. 2 Trinity

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team went scoreless for the first six minutes of action against No. 2-ranked Trinity and was unable to recover, falling 79-60 to the Tigers on Saturday evening in Hughey Gym.

Trinity jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before Austin College got on the board with a basket by Sarah Putnicki at the 3:59 mark, and the 'Roos found themselves trailing 16-6 after 10 minutes of action. Trinity would again outscore the 'Roos by 10 in the second quarter on their way to a 45-25 lead at halftime, and the margin grew to 65-36 through three quarters. Austin College put 24 points on the board in the final 10 minutes of the game to narrow the gap, making it a 19 point final margin.

The 'Roos hit just 3-of-12 shots in the opeing quarter, committing nine turnovers in the frame, but put together a strong defensive effort in holding Trinity to 6-of-19 shooting in the period. Trinity responded by knocking down 10-of-14 shots, including 4-of-6 from long range in the second quarter, while Austin College got three treys from Megan O'Neil in the frame. O'Neil finished the game hitting 4-of-10 from long range on her way to 12 points, giving her 17 made three pointers in two games this weekend. Austin College hit 10-of-15 from the field in the fourth quarter to finish the game strong and pull within 20 of the unbeaten Tigers.

Putnicki paced Austin College with 13 points, hitting 5-of-8 from the field while adding five rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the 'Roos. Brooklyn Matthews came off the bench to chip in 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, coming up one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards in the loss. Naomi Anamekwe grabbed 10 rebounds, and Sarah Gwin also came up just short of a double-double with nine points and nine assists. Ashlyn Milton led all scorers with 21 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots overall and 5-of-7 from deep for the Tigers.
