St. Thomas Tops 'Roo Women

HOUSTON, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team found themselves in a 16-4 hole early on and were never quite able to recover, ultimately falling 61-51 at the University of St. Thomas on Friday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 0-12 on the year.

Naomi Anamekwe had a career day for the 'Roos in defeat, posting 14 points and 14 rebounds for the first double-double in her three seasons at Austin College. Both of those totals also set new career bests. Anamekwe was the lone 'Roo to reach double figures in the scoring column, however, with Megan O'Neil coming up a point shy with nine points in the game, while Sarah Putnicki had eight points and seven rebounds. Overall, the 'Roos shot just 32.8% from the field and were 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.

Austin College held a 45-40 rebounding advantage, as well as a 10-4 edge in second chance points, but the Celts hounded the 'Roos into 20 turnovers and outscored Austin College 13-5 from the free throw line.

After trailing by double digits early, the 'Roos closed the gap to make it 30-27 at halftime, but a 14-2 run for the Celts to open the third quarter made it 44-29 and Austin College was unable to mount a comeback. Alexya Castillo led all scorers with 17 points for UST.

Austin College is back in action on Saturday, heading to Shreveport to take on Centenary at 1:00 p.m.
