'Roo Women Survive Scare From Colorado College

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team trailed by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter but the No. 24-ranked 'Roos battled back for a 64-61 win over Colorado College on Friday night in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 16-2 overall and 9-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Ann Savage knocked down a runner in the lane with just under 25 seconds to play to put Austin College on top 62-61 and Ally Longaker knocked down a pair of free throws seven seconds later, and the 'Roos held Colorado College without a clean look in the closing moments to escape with the win. Austin College struggled to get things going offensively in the game, hitting just 3-of-14 shots in the opening quarter and trailing 15-12 after one. The 'Roos turned around and held the Tigers to 3-of-14 shooting in the second quarter and went into the locker room leading 31-29.

After holding Colorado College forward McKenzie Gertz, who entered the game averaging nearly 20 points-per-game, scoreless in the first half, Gertz got seven in the third quarter to help the Tigers take a 49-45 lead heading into the fourth. Gertz added seven more points in the fourth quarter to help push the lead to 53-45, but a basket by Andrea Selkow and five quick points from Kacie West helped Austin College battle back and eventually take a 60-58 lead. Colorado College went ahead 61-60 on a basket by Jordan Meltzer with 1:14 left, but Savage's basket in the lane pushed Austin College ahead for good.

West scored all of her game-high 16 points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter to help the 'Roos come from behind. Savage posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Reagan Chiaverini chipped in 10 points, while Longaker finished with nine points and 11 boards. Austin College shot just 37.3% from the field and were held to a season-low one made three pointer in the win.

Colorado College owned a 51-to-38 rebounding edge, with 17 of those boards coming on the offensive glass, and Gertz finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Meltzer finished with 12, and Anna Fanelli added 11.

Austin College is back in action tomorrow when they host Johnson & Wales at 6:00 p.m. in Hughey Gym.
