SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team fell twice in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against defending conference champ St. Thomas on Saturday, falling 10-1 in game one before coming up just short in a 5-4 game two decision. The 'Roos are now 7-8 overall and 0-3 in SCAC play on the year.

In the first game of the day and second of the weekend series, the Celts jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the first before Carrie Johnson got the 'Roos on the board with an RBI single. UST's Chloe Bennett fouled out to deep right field in the second, bringing home a run on the tag-up to make it 4-1, and the Celts erupted for six runs in the third to make it a 10-1 game. Four different players knocked in a run before a throwing error opened the door for the final two runs of the inning, which would prove to be the last two runs scored in the game.

Hannah King took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs on four hits in an inning of work, while Allison Hughes got the win for UST, going 4.0 innings and giving up one run on four hits. Johnson went 2-for-2 and Elizabeth Preston went 2-for-3 to pace the 'Roos, while Tori Fowler went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases.

St. Thomas once again grabbed an early lead in the second game of day, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The margin grew to 3-0 in the top of the second before Austin College got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, with Hailie Swiatkowski doubling home a run to cut it to a 3-1 game. The Celts made it 4-1 in the fourth, but Faith Butler drove in a run to cut it back to a 4-2 game, and that's how things would stand heading into the seventh. In the top of the seventh, the Celts managed to get one more run across to extend their lead to 5-2. Austin College got an RBI from Lyndsey Busch in the bottom half of the inning, and Alexus Johnson brought Carrie Johnson home to cut it to 5-4, but that's as close as things would get as Austin College's comeback bid came up just short.

Alexus Johnson went the distance in the circle to absorb the loss, giving up five runs -- three earned -- on 11 hits. She also had a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Swiatkowski went 3-for-4 and Butler went 2-for-4.

Austin College is back in action on Sunday, hosting La Roche at 1:00 p.m. for a single game before taking on the Redhawks in a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
