'Roo Softball Drops SCAC Opener to UST

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against defending champ St. Thomas on Friday evening at Sherman High School, falling 13-0 in five innings against the Celts. The 'Roos are now 7-6 overall on the year.

Alexus Johnson took the loss for Austin College after surrendering 11 runs, only five of which were earned, as the 'Roos committed four errors as a team. Elizabeth Preston and Chyrsi Hemby each collected one hit for Austin College in the loss. The Celts managed to plate four unearned runs in the top of the first to get out to an early lead, and they'd add three more runs in the second to make it a 7-0 game. Two more runs came across in the third to make it 9-0, and the Celts would plate two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to make it a 13-0 final.

Victoria Sossaman got the win for St. Thomas, going the distance in the circle and striking out six batters while walking six and giving up a pair of hits, and Jaelyn Simmons went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, as St. Thomas finished with 11 hits as a team. Austin College and UST will wrap up their series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
