'Roo Cross Country Set for SCAC Championships

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's and women's cross country teams are headed to Colorado Springs this weekend, where they'll compete in the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Colorado College on Saturday morning.

Both the men's and women's teams have had strong seasons, including RJ Navarro's four consecutive first place finishes and a number of personal bests on both the men's and women's sides. It's been a record-setting year for Navarro, who established a new program-best in the 8k with a time of 26:34.8 in October at McMurry. The 'Roos have also gotten consistently strong performances from Johnny and Chris Biffar, Andrew Thomas, and Charlie McIntyre, helping the team to overall first place finishes at three meets this season. Prior to 2019, the 'Roos had never won an overall team title at any meet, making this the most successful season for the men's program since it's establishment as a varsity sport.

The women have also gotten several strong performances throughout the year, with Danielle Lozano notching multiple top 10 finishes and setting multiple personal bests, including a third place finish at a 5k meet hosted by the University of Dallas earlier this year. Madison Barnum has turned in an outstanding first season as a collegiate runner, coming in fourth at the UD Invitational and a ninth place finish at East Texas Baptist. Head coach Bryan Garcia has also gotten good efforts from Tori Dodd and Becca Tobias this season, and the 'Roos will all be looking to make a move up the list of finishers at the conference meet this weekend.

The men will hit the course at 10:00 a.m. Mountain time on Saturday morning, while the women follow an hour later.
