               Winter Sports have officially ended, and Spring Sports move closer to their Conference Schedule every day.  This means that Spring Break is just around the corner!  For all you academics out there in #RooNation requiring a much-needed break, you only need to make it a few more weeks…

Meanwhile, Tennis is on pace for a historic season, Baseball picked up its first home win (with three more opportunities coming this weekend), and Softball is gearing up for their last “non-conference” game of the season mid-week next Tuesday.

But before we get into all of the next opportunities to see Austin College Athletics in action, let’s recap all that happened this past week in an exciting weekend of Kangaroo Sports.  This is your AC Athletics Update!

 

Baseball

                After dropping their first two game at home, the Baseball Team picked up their first home win against the University of the Southwest (NM) 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

                The Kangaroos will look to improve on a 3-9 record when they host LeTourneau at home this Friday and Saturday in a triple-header.

Distance Track

                The Kangaroo Track Team opens their second season with Head Coach Bryan Garcia on the road this weekend against the University of Texas-Tyler.

                With three First-Year Student-Athletes bolstering the roster and Junior Alex Quinn coming off her best Cross Country season of her career, things look bright for Austin College’s future.  Good luck, AC!

Women’s Basketball

                In the SCAC Conference Tournament this past weekend, the Kangaroos picked up a huge first-round victory over the University of Dallas 58-54 to advance to the semi-finals.  Sadly, Austin College met defeat at the hands of the #2 seeded Texas Lutheran University in a heartbreaking 63-59 final score.

                A huge 3rd Quarter surge put the ‘Roos up 4-points going into the fourth quarter, but the 41.8 FG percentage (40.8% 3pt) from the Bulldogs was too much to handle as TLU advanced to the finals on Sunday.

                AC closed the books on 2016-17 with a 19-8 (10-4) record, winning 8 of 11 at home, 8 of 11 on the road, and 3 of 4 at a neutral facility.

                Thank you, Seniors Olivia Bailey, Olivia Cicci, Madi Aliff and Kendall Heitmeier for all that you have given for this program over your four years.  Your impact will stay for years to come as a roster filled with young talent and now several years of experience comes back stronger next year because of your leadership.

                Great season, AC.  Work hard in the offseason, and we will see you in the winter of 2017.

 

Women’s Tennis

                Women’s Tennis picked up three decisive victories out of four this weekend over Howard Payne (9-0), Mary Hardin-Baylor (9-0), and University of the Ozarks (8-1), falling only to UT-Tyler (9-0).

                First-Year Student-Athlete Katie Seibert went 3-1 on the weekend in both Singles and Doubles with partner Anna Sergiovanni.  Sophomore Kirsten Weber went 2-0 at Line 1 Singles, and the Line 3 tandem of Carlye Lide and Anamariia Kheveli moved to 3-1 on the year in doubles.

                The Kangaroos move to 6-4 (1-0) on the year after the matches this weekend.  Their 5-2 home record through the month of February is the best mark Women’s Tennis has posted in several years, and their 6-wins are one away from eclipsing the mark set in 2015-16.

                Austin College is off until March 24th when they host the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire at the Elizabeth Russell Tennis Center.  Start time is set for 5:30PM

 

Men’s Tennis

                Men’s Tennis won three matches as well this weekend, defeating Howard Payne 8-1, Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-2, and University of the Ozarks 9-0.  The ‘Roos won three 3rd-set matches in singles to lift them above UMHB in the morning match on Saturday.

                In the team loss to UT-Tyler, Sophomore Kenneth Hardy and Freshman Siddharth Kortikere defeated the West Region’s 8th – ranked doubles team in Arthur Fagundes/Vinicio Hadlich 8-5 for a signature victory early in their young careers.  The UT-Tyler duo is considered the 3rd best team in the Texas-region from pre-season polls.

                Austin College moves to 6-3 (1-0) on the season with a home record of 4-2.  This is the best start for the Men’s Tennis Team since before 2000.  And while the Kangaroos are off from now until March 24th, they will host the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire at 5:30PM in preparation for the meat of their conference schedule in April.
