Holmes Named Kedric Couch Alumni Coach of the Year

SHERMAN, Texas - DeAndre Holmes has been named the 2021-22 Kedric Couch Alumni Coach of the Year in recognition of his outstanding success over the past academic year, Austin College has announced.

Holmes was a four-year letterwinner for the Austin College football team, making nearly 200 tackles and earning All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference recognition during a career that spanned from 2010-2013. This past year he became the head boys and girls powerlifting coach at Robstown Early College High School, and under his leadership the roster grew from 12 to 60, including 45 first-time lifters.

With Holmes at the helm, a school record 17 girls qualified for regionals, with seven of those young women later qualifying for the state championships, while nine members from the boys team qualified for regionals with one moving on to state qualification. That competitor finished third in the state championships in his weight class.

All seven of the girls he coached to the state championships medaled, including finishes of fifth place, third place, a pair of second place finishes, and three first place finishes. Those outstanding performances lifted the team to the Texas 4A Division 2 State Championship, marking just the third state championship in the high school's history, including the first for a women's team and the first for the powerlifting program.

In addition to serving as the school's powerlifting head coach, he is also the football team's defensive coordinator and serves as the Assistant Athletics Director.
