SHERMAN, Texas - Austin College Athletics is excited to announce the Modern Woodmen of America Student-Athlete of the Week, an award highlighting our great student-athletes on and off the field of play each week. This week's honoree is 'Roo women's water polo player Valery Piachonkina.

Piachonkina, a senior goalie from Castro Valley, Calif., was named the CWPA Division III Defensive Player of the Week after an outstanding weekend in her home state to open the season. Piachonkina helped the 'Roos to a 2-2 record, including a win over then No. 5-ranked Chapman, which is the team's first win over a top 5 team in program history, as well as a victory over NCAA Division II opponent Fresno Pacific. That win marks the first time the 'Roos have defeated a Division II opponent from the West Coast, and the third win over a Division II opponent overall.
