
'Roo Water Polo Sweeps CWPA Weekly Awards
SHERMAN, Texas - After an outstanding undefeated home weekend in which the Austin College women's water polo team knocked off both the No. 5 and No. 6-ranked teams in the nation, Bianca Gallegos has been named the CWPA Division III Player of the Week, Ashley Chand earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Clara Koenig has been named the Rookie of the Week, the league office has announced.
SHERMAN, Texas - After an outstanding undefeated home weekend in which the Austin College women's water polo team knocked off both the No. 5 and No. 6-ranked teams in the nation, Bianca Gallegos has been named the CWPA Division III Player of the Week, Ashley Chand earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Clara Koenig has been named the Rookie of the Week, the league office has announced.
Gallegos, a junior center from Albuquerque, N.M., earned Player of the Week accolades following a weekend in which she scored 12 goals with three steals, an assist, and five ejections drawn. Gallegos opened the weekend with five goals agianst Penn State Behrend and followed that with a pair of tallies against Carthage, before scoring once against Macalester and wrapping up the weekend with four goals against Augustana, who was ranked No. 5 heading into the weekend.
Chand, a senior center defender from Southlake, paced the team's defensive effort on her way to earning Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the second time this season. Chand had 10 steals and two field blocks while also finding her way into the scoring column multiple times in four games, and was instrumental on the 'Roos holding off Augustana for a 14-13 win. In that game, Chand had four steals and a field block, and added three steals in the team's win over Penn State Behrend to open the weekend.
Koenig, a freshman attacker from Cypress, had eight goals, six assists, 10 steals, and two field blocks on her way to earning Rookie of the Week honors. Koenig scored three goals in the win over Augustana, including tallying on the very first possession of the game and adding what would prove to be the game-winner in the closely contested game. She added three steals in that victory, and also added three goals in the team's win over Carthage.
