'Roos Drop Two on Day One of Whittier Invitational

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Austin College volleyball team opened its weekend trip to California with a pair of defeats on Friday evening at the Whittier Invitational, falling 3-0 to La Lerne and 3-1 to Pomona-Pitzer. The 'Roos are now 3-3 on the season.

The 'Roos dropped their first match of the day against La Verne by scores of 25-21, 25-12, 25-18, as Austin College struggled offensively with a team attacking percentage of -0.017, with 21 attacking errors compared to 19 kills. TJ Folse had five kills to pace the 'Roos, and Mattie Duncan added four. Folse also added 12 digs, while Laynie Kovacs had a team-best 13 and Madison Manning added 11 to go along with a team-best seven assists. Rita Araya had three block assists for Austin College.

In the team's second match of the day against Pomona-Pitzer, the 'Roos took the first set 25-20, but dropped the next three by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-17 to finish with a 3-1 defeat. Austin College hit .157 as a team, and Folse once again led the way offensively with 12 kills while adding seven digs. Araya had seven kills and four total blocks, and Rachel Sadler added six kills. Kovacs led Austin College defensively with 14 digs, and Manning had a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs. Brianne Tseng added 11 assists and four digs.
