'Roo Volleyball Falls Twice to Trinity

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College volleyball team opened its season up with a pair of losses against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-favorite Trinity University on Saturday, falling by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 to the Tigers.

The Tigers, who last season went to the Division III Final Four, got out to a quick start in the opening match with a 25-12 set one win before Austin College settled in and took the second set 25-22. Trinity regained control, however, taking the third set 25-17 and the fourth by a score of 25-12. The 'Roos hit just .040 as a team with 28 attacking errors and 11 reception errors, while the Tigers hit .246 as a team. 

Shelbi Cook had eight kills in 15 attempts to lead Austin College, while Victoria Smith had six kills and four block assists. Mari Prazak led the 'Roos with 16 digs, and Ali Horton and Brooklyn Talley had 13 and 12 assists, respectively. Talley added nine digs in the loss.

Trinity jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second match of the day by scores of 25-17 and 25-12 before the 'Roos came out strong in the third set, taking a 16-14 lead before the Tigers rallied ahead 19-17. The 'Roos fought back to square things up at 22 apiece but the Tigers closed things out to secure the 3-0 win. Trinity hit .353 as a team in the second match, while the 'Roos had a .218 team attack percentage. Austin College had just 12 attacking errors in the match, but Trinity used a 9-to-1 service ace advantage in their victory.

Spencer Wynne had nine kills to pace Austin College, and Riley Abernathy had eight kills with zero errors in 20 attacks. Cook had another strong game with seven kills in 15 chances with no errors, and Horton had 17 assists to lead that way in that category. Prazak led Austin College with 11 digs in defeat.
