'Roo Tennis Splits with McMurry
SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over visiting McMurry University on Thursday evening, while the men fell 7-0 to the War Hawks at the Jordan Family Courts at the Russell Tennis Center.
SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over visiting McMurry University on Thursday evening, while the men fell 7-0 to the War Hawks at the Jordan Family Courts at the Russell Tennis Center.
McMurry took the point in women's doubles competition, as the 'Roos fell by scores of 6-2 on lines one and two as Olivia Sanchez and Natalie Valle were topped in flight one while Bailey Standokes and Emma Davidson were defeated playing number two. Karsyn Clouse and Lauren Hofeldt won line three by default, but with two of three victories McMurry took the lone point to go up 1-0 heading into singles.
Standokes was downed 1-6, 0-6 on line one in singles, and Clouse battled but came up short in a 5-7, 6-1, 5-10 decision on line three. However, Sanchez earned a 6-0, 6-1 line two victory and Davidson won 6-0, 6-2 playing line four, with Valle and Hofeldt earning wins by default on lines four and five to seal the narrow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.
The War Hawks took doubles on the men's side as well, winning line three by default while Trey Salyer and Patrick Fenner were topped 6-4 on line one and Cruz Rocha and Joel Colunga were defeated 6-0 on line two to put McMurry ahead as the teams began singles play.
Salyer fell 5-7, 1-6 on line one and Fenner was topped 0-6, 1-6 playing on line two. Colunga fought but came up short in a 6-7 (1-6), 3-6 defeat on line three, and Rocha lost 1-6, 0-6 on line four. The War Hawks earned wins by default on lines four and five.
