
Women’s Tennis Records 9-0 Shutout In Home Opener
Doubles sweep leads to Singles sweep in victory over Whitworth
SHERMAN, Tex. - The Women's Tennis Team from Austin College recorded their first shutout of the season in their home opener over the Pirates of Whitworth University 9-0.
Doubles set the tone for the remainder of the match, as the 'Roos took a commanding sweep over their opponents 3-0 as the match transitioned into singles play. Katie Seibert and Georgia Moore continued their success on the year, claiming the first point of the match in dominant fashion 8-1 at Line 3. Grace Ortiz & Melody Duong consolidated late breaks of their opponents serve to pull away 8-4 at Line 2, and defending SCAC Women's Doubles Team of the Week, Anna Sergiovanni & Diana Carvajalino battled from behind early to finish 8-4 at Line 1.
Melody Duong dominated at Line 1 to capture the first singles point for the 'Roos, 6-2, 6-2, and Anna Sergiovanni clinched the match soon after in a back-and-forth battle at Line 3, 6-4, 6-4. Diana Carvajalino made quick work of her Line 2 opponent after a tight first set, 6-4, 6-2.
Chandler Morris battled through dropping a quick first set, but took the second set just as decisively, forcing a third-set super-tiebreaker. Morris rectified her defeat from last week in a comparable format, closing out the comeback 10-4 in the decisive tiebreaker.
With the match already locked up for the 'Roos, Georgia Moore and Grace Ortiz capped the shutout with straight-set victories at Lines 5 and 6. Ortiz won 6-2, 6-0 while Moore battled for a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory in which she won the last 4 points of the second-set tiebreaker.
Austin College's next match will be at home against the 24th-ranked Pirate of Southwestern University, followed by the 34th-ranked defending ASC Champion East Texas Baptist University. Matches will begin on February 24th at 10:00AM and 3:00PM at the Elizabeth Russell Tennis Center.
