Kangaroo Tennis Closes Out Women's ITA's With Big Wins

TYLER, Tex. - Another historic day for Austin College Women's Tennis concluded the ITA Regional Championship activities for the Kangaroos today.

The 'Roos began the day at 8AM with three competitors still in the Round of 16 of main draw singles; a first for program history.  First year Melody Duong fell in a closely contested 6-3, 6-1 decision to the #7-seed Marie Lutz of Trinity University.  Duong compiled two wins in her first ITA Regional Tournament, and will look to use her experience in this tournament to build a successful career for the spring and her future.

8th-seed Anna Sergiovanni defeated a first-year seeded player Esther Bowers from Southwestern to advance to the Quarterfinals, just before Diana Carvajalino followed suit and became the only un-seeded player left in the tournament.  Carvajalino defeated her second seeded player, Andrea Leon from Trinity University, 6-4, 6-0.

In A-Consolation, Kirsten Weber and Katie Seibert squared off in a Kangaroo round of 16 matchup, in which Weber would prevail 6-3, 6-1.  Weber would ultimately fall in a 3rd set super-tiebreaker to Schreiner's Lauren Stanley, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (8).

Chandler Morris, also in A-Consolation, defeated Texas Lutheran's MP Hubert 6-1, 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-3 to Svaksha Iyengar of UT-Dallas.

Over at the Tyler Junior College Tennis Courts, Brenna McCown won the first set against TLU's Madison Starr 6-2, but battled illness through the remainder of the match, falling 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).  Summer Willig would default due to injury.

As the last team standing on the doubles courts, Weber and Victoria Gilbert faced a tough Southwestern duo, but fell 8-2 in the quarterfinals of A-draw to Nicole Wilson and Cecile Wilde, ending the Kangaroos tournament for 2017.

Austin College will return to the practice courts for two more weeks before the offseason begins.  Their next match will be on the road at Howard Payne University, on Friday, February 9th, 2018 at 6:00PM
