Kangaroo Ladies Tennis Falls 5-4 at McMurry

Kangaroo Ladies Tennis Falls 5-4 at McMurry

ABILENE, Tex. - A heated contest was had between the McMurry Warhawks and the Austin College Kangaroos, with the hosts edging the Lady 'Roos 5-4 after approximately 6 hours.

In their third match of their first weekend of competition, the Kangaroo doubles teams looked vastly improved, with Grace Ortiz and Kirsten Weber winning 8-6 over a tough McMurry tandem of Patterson and Hathorn.

Meghan White and Carlye Lide raced out 4-1 and 5-2 leads in their match before playing complacent tennis and allowing McMurry to play more aggressive tennis en route to an 8-5 victory for the Warhawks at Line 2 doubles.

As doubles competition finished 2-1 in favor of McMurry, singles play began with a flurry of activity.  Weber and Patterson had a close first set highlighted by long, griding points and solid groundstrokes.  McMurry would take the first set in a tiebreaker, and use that momentum to steal the second set for a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over the fantastic freshman.

Meghan White stayed perfect at Line 3 singles on the season, fighting back from 2-5 in the first set to win 7-5, 6-3 over Ritz of McMurry.

Anamariia Kheveli had a back-and-forth first set with Munoz at Line 4 singles, but ultimately won the match with her aggressiveness and well-placed approach shots, 7-6(2), 6-4.

Carlye Lide was the last singles match to go on and the last court to finish at Line 6 Singles.  After struggling to find her groove while still playing competitive tennis in the first set, Lide busted the second set open with a 5-0 lead.  After McMurry ground out 3 straight games, Lide slammed any route to a comeback shut with a strong service game, winning 7-5, 6-3.

The result today was much improved from last year's match, as the Warhawks dominated the Kangaroos 8-1 in Sherman, almost exactly a year ago.  The 3-court improvement in today's contest shows how competitive our Lady 'Roos are becoming as SCAC Conference Play opens Saturday, February 13 at 10:00 AM vs. Southwestern University in Sherman, TX.
