The Austin College women's tennis team made some noise amongst the Southwest Region's elite this past weekend at the ITA Fall Regional Championship hosted by Trinity University.
All six women's tennis players advanced into the second day of competition in their respective draws, with Cierra White and Magan Green advancing to the consolation semi-finals on the third day of competition in the A-Draw and B-Draw singles respectively.
But the success did not come without struggle, perseverance, and determination. At the completion of the tournament, the 'Roos had played four tiebreakers for the set (1/4) and seven match tiebreakers for the third set (5/7).
"Our ladies played with a lot of heart this weekend," commented head coach Ryan Dodd. "There were a lot of opportunities where they could have packed it in and quit on themselves. But give them their credit. They kept fighting and five out of seven times came away with a third-set win. That takes guts."
In doubles action, the 'Roos recorded three wins and three losses with two teams advancing into the quarterfinals. The team of Katie Barber and Carlye Lide posted a victory over East Texas Baptist University's Ellis and Nuall 8-4 to close out their first day following a default in the Round of 16, while White and Anamariia Khevelli rolled to an 8-0 victory over Wallace and Zinc-Pituskin of Ozarks. While Magan Green and Grace Ortiz did not record a win, their thrilling match against Camacho and McClure of McMurry ended in 'extra-innings' 7-9.
"We're still raw in our knowledge of doubles," said Dodd. "But we came here and proved what we wanted to prove; that if we keep up the work we have put in over the last two weeks, we're a team that deserves respect."
The women's tennis team is back on the courts for another couple of weeks in the fall before taking the courts at Home vs. McMurry February 14 at 10 a.m.
