
Women's Hoops Opens Season with Victory
CONWAY, Ark. - The Austin College women's basketball team got off to a slow start in their season opener at Hendrix College, but the 'Roos took control in the final three quarters to come away with a 67-54 victory over the Warriors.
CONWAY, Ark. - The Austin College women's basketball team got off to a slow start in their season opener at Hendrix College, but the 'Roos took control in the final three quarters to come away with a 67-54 victory over the Warriors.
Austin College scored just seven points in the opening quarter, finding themselves trailing 14-7 through one, but the 'Roos took control in the second quarter by out-pacing Hendrix 20-9 to make it 27-23 at halftime. The Austin College lead grew to double figures late in the third quarter, and after the Warriors cut the deficit to five early in the fourth, the 'Roos started to pull away in the game's final minutes. Baskets by Brooklyn Matthews and Avory Miller pushed it to a 62-50 game with two and a half minutes left, and the 'Roos maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The 'Roos shot just 37.9% from the field, compared to a 41.2% clip for the Warriors, but Austin College hounded Hendrix into 25 turnovers, leading to a 17-to-9 advantage in points off of turnovers. The 'Roos also knocked down seven threes, compared to four for Hendrix, and got 20 points off the bench. Lexi Martin paced Austin College with 18 points, knocking down 4-of-12 from beyond the arc, and added three steals. Matthews finished with 16 points and seven boards, and Miller had 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
Next up for Austin College is another road game against Lyon College on Saturday afternoon.
