Women's Basketball Notches Overtime Win

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team pulled out a 79-76 overtime victory at Schreiner University on Saturday, with Grace Moothart knocking down a pair of threes in the extra frame to help boost the 'Roos to the victory.

Moothart established a new career-high of 19 points in the win to lead the 'Roos, hitting 5-of-11 triples while adding four assists and three steals, and Brookly Matthews came up just shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Austin College opened the game with a trio of threes, including two from Lexi Martin, to take a 9-2 lead but Schreiner stormed back and finished the opening frame with an 18-14 lead. The 'Roos bounced back by winning the second quarter, and they'd head into halftime trailing 33-32. The 'Roos and Mountaineers played evenly in the third, with Schreiner holding a slim 46-45 advantage going into the final frame.

Austin College surged ahead 53-47 with 6:22 left to play, and a basket by Lauren Traylor made it 59-52 two minutes later. Austin College stayed on top heading into the final two minutes of regulation, with Matthews scoring to put the 'Roos on top 64-57 before Schreiner battled back, and a three from Demauria Miles squared things up at 67-67 with 38 seconds left to play. Neither team was able to get a basket in the closing moments of the fourth, sending the game into overtime. Moothart's two treys put Austin College on top 75-69 early but the Mountaineers clawed back and tied things at 76-76 with 1:49 left, but the 'Roos held Schreiner scoreless in the final two minutes and Matthews made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Matthews hit 6-of-8 shots from the field and was also 6-of-8 from the stripe, and Martin added 16 points, hitting 4-of-9 from deep, and added five assists and three steals. Traylor chipped in nine points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Amarys Cuellar posted career-highs of 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead Austin College in both categories. Miles finished with 21 points for Schreiner to lead all scorers.
