'Roo Women's Hoops Falls on Senior Day

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team got off to a slow start offensively and couldn't recover, falling 54-43 to the University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon as the 'Roos celebrated Senior Day. Austin College closes the year with a record of 1-24 on the season.

Austin College went scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of the game, as Dallas built a 10-0 lead over that span before Paulina Porter's three pointer with 3:25 got the 'Roos on the board. The Crusaders finished the opening frame with a 12-8 lead, and that grew to 28-17 at halftime as Austin College hit just 6-of-28 from the field in the first 20 minutes of action. The margin grew to 32-17 early in the second half, and Dallas increased their lead to 40-24 with 3:51 left in the third before Sarah Gwin knocked down a trey and Brooklyn Matthews made a bucket to cut it to 40-29. However, the Crusaders would take a 43-30 lead into the fourth.

Austin College trimmed the deficit to 46-37 with 4:13 left to play, and after Dallas pushed it back to a double digit game the 'Roos got it to 49-41 after a basket by Sarah Putnicki with just under two minutes left. That'd be as close as the 'Roos would get things, though, and the Crusaders managed to hold off a late comeback bid by Austin College. The 'Roos were limited to just 26.7% shooting in the game, and the Crusaders held an 11-6 scoring edge on free throws. Gwin scored 10 and added six rebounds and three assists for the 'Roos, and Matthews chipped in eight points off the bench. Putnicki finished with five points and eight boards. Tessa Hastings and Adryan Alvarez each scored 11 to pace the Crusaders.
