'Roos Fall to UTD in Overtime

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team led UT-Dallas by six points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Comets clamped down defensively in the final period to force overtime, eventually topping the 'Roos 55-47. The 'Roos are now 0-11 on the year.

After ending the opening quarter all square at 12, Austin College took a slight edge in the second quarter on their way to a 24-23 lead at halftime. Sarah Putnicki scored eight of Austin College's 12 second quarter points to help the 'Roos take the one point advantage into the third quarter. In the third, Megan O'Neil knocked down three triples to help Austin College outscore the Comets 15-10 in the period to make it a 39-33 game heading into the final frame.

Putnicki would make a basket to put Austin College ahead 43-38 with 5:48 left to play, but that's the last basket the 'Roos would get until the final seconds of the game. UTD scored seven straight in the game's closing minutes to make it 45-43 with 1:09 left, but Putnicki hit a turnaround jumper in the paint as time expired to knot things up and force overtime. However, Austin College's offensive struggled carried over from the fourth quarter into OT, as the Comets scored the first six points to make it 51-45 with two and a half minutes left. Brooklyn Matthews knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 51-47 with 2:22 left, but those would be the final points of the game for Austin College.

O'Neil hit 5-of-9 from long range to finish with 15 points, and Putnicki added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a pair of blocks. Matthews had six points and seven boards, while Grace Moothart came off the bench to hit a pair of threes for six points. Sarah Gwin handed out a game-best seven assists in defeat. Jordan Maxwell paced UTD with 12 points, six rebounds, five steals, and four assists.
