Women's Hoops Edged by Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. - The Austin College women's basketball team led most of the way, but a late run by Millsaps culminated in a 65-63 defeat for the 'Roos on Saturday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 0-9 on the year.

After trailing 18-14 in the opening quarter, the 'Roos took control in the second and held a 35-31 advantage heading into halftime. The Austin College lead grew to 54-47 after three quarters, but Millsaps opened the fourth with a 10-2 run to grab a 57-56 lead at the 6:26 mark. Brooklyn Matthews scored to make it 58-57, and after the Majors went back on top 60-58, Sarah Putnicki got a bucket to square things up at 60 apiece with 2:31 left to play.

However, the Majors would get five points in the final 34 seconds to go on top 65-60 before a buzzer beater three pointer from Sarah Gwin made it a 65-63 final. Austin College shot 47.3% from the field, but the Majors outscored the 'Roos 17-4 from the free throw line, attempting 32 foul shots to six for Austin College. The Majors also forced the 'Roos into 21 turnovers in the game. Putnicki led the 'Roos with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, adding four rebounds and three blocked shots. Gwin and Meagan O'Neil each had 14 points, with Gwin added three assists. Kaylee Lewis led the 'Roos with six rebounds. Haley Franklin led all scorers with 31 points for Millsaps.

Austin College is back in action on Monday, when they host Occidental at 1:00 p.m. in Hughey Gym.
