Cold Shooting Dooms 'Roo Women's Hoops

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team hit just 21.2% from the field and Southwestern used a big third quarter to push past the 'Roos, who were unable to mount a comeback in a 50-40 defeat on Friday evening in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 0-6 overall and 0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Austin College trailed 8-3 nearly seven minutes into the opening quarter before Naomi Anamekwe scored and Sarah Gwin followed with a triple to square things up, and the 'Roos and the Pirates would head into the second quarter all square at 10-10. Southwestern opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to make it 16-12 with 3:09 left before halftime, but Naomi Anamekwe scored to pull the 'Roos within two and Sarah Gwin tied things up with a floater in the lane to beat the shot clock, and Gwin would drill a deep three at the buzzer to put Austin College ahead 19-16 at the break.

However, the Pirates caught fire from beyond the arc in the third quarter, exploding for 24 points and hitting 4-of-7 from downtown on their way to a 40-30 advantage heading into the fourth. Lauren Traylor's three gave the 'Roos a 28-27 lead with 4:08 to play, but the Pirates closed the quarter with a 13-2 run and wouldn't look back from there. Austin College cut it to a five point game at 40-35 on a three from Gwin early in the fourth, but that's as close as things would get. Southwestern extended its lead to double digits at 46-35 midway through the quarter and the 'Roos were unable to chip away down the stretch.

The 'Roos hounded Southwestern into 23 turnovers, but the Pirates owned a 54-34 advantage on the glass in the game. The Pirates also outscored the 'Roos 26-16 in the paint, while shooting 39.3% from the field as a team. Gwin led the 'Roos with 13 points on 4-of-18 shooting, while Traylor had nine points and eight rebounds. Aniyah Burke scored 15 points for Southwestern to lead all scorers, while Ellie Ward had 13 rebounds and Reece Sandercock had eight blocked shots.
