ETBU Topples 'Roo Women's Hoops

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team dropped a 75-46 decision against visiting East Texas Baptist on Tuesday, as the Tigers hounded the 'Roos into 23 turnovers and limited Austin College to 34% shooting in the game. The 'Roos are now 0-5 to open the year.

Austin College came out strong and a Megan O'Neil three pointer had the 'Roos even with ETBU at 10-10 with 4:27 left in the opening quarter, but the Tigers used a 7-0 run to close the frame to make it 17-10 heading into the second. The margin grew to 30-14 midway through the second quarter before O'Neil closed the half with five quick points to make it 30-19, but the Tigers would once again finish the quarter strong with four in a row in the final minutes to make it a 34-19 game at the break.

The 'Roos opened the third quarter with a 6-2 run to trim it to a 36-25 game, but the Tigers extended the margin to 48-28 with 3:20 left in the period. East Texas Baptist would push the deficit to 51-30 heading into the fourth quarter. Austin College cut it to 53-36 on a three from Sarah Gwin early in the fourth, and after the Tigers pushed the lead back over 20, the 'Roos got it back down to 62-44 on a triple from Marianna Bert with 4:10 left to play. However, that's as close as things would get down the stretch, with ETBU closing the game with a 13-1 run.

O'Neil led all scorers with 16 points off the bench for Austin College, hitting 6-of-10 shots overall and 4-of-5 from long range. Sarah Putnicki chipped in eight points and four rebounds, while Lauren Traylor added six points and five boards. Paulina Porter handed out a team-best four assists in the loss. Jade Goynes led ETBU with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists, and Brooke Webster added 10 points and six boards for the Tigers.
