'Roo Women Fall to Schreiner in Overtime

Schreiner grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and scored the first seven points in overtime to hand the 'Roo women's basketball team an 86-80 loss on Friday night in Kerrville. The 'Roos fall to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the loss.

Schreiner came out strong and took a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and a 39-33 lead into halftime, but a strong third quarter in which the 'Roos closed on a 21-8 run to take a 60-55 lead into the fourth. Austin College led by as much as seven in the fourth before a 7-0 run by Schreiner squared things at 67 with 2:31 left, and after Kali Vittallo's free throws gave the 'Roos a two point lead with under a minute to go, Schreiner's Kelsie Jackson answered with two free throws of her own to force overtime with the teams knotted at 73.

The Mountaineers would score the first seven points in overtime to take an 80-73 lead with 3:11 left to play. The 'Roos would trim it to a four point game on a three from Kendall Heitmeier and a layup by Katie Gowdy to make it an 82-78 game with 1:53 left, but that's as close as the 'Roos would get.

Heitmeier scored 18 points to lead the 'Roos and Vittallo finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kelly Lynch scored 14, and Bryce Frank and Gowdy each added 11 in the loss.
