Riley Leads 'Roo Women Past Schreiner

Erin Riley recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Austin College women's basketball team past Schreiner 57-48 on Friday night in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 9-6 overall and 4-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the victory.

Both teams got out to a slow start offensively, with a pair of treys from Riley giving Austin College a 6-5 lead with 13:34 remaining. Schreiner took a 12-9 lead with 6:22 left in the half, but Brittany Stepanski and Christina Kime combined for the next 10 Austin College points and Riley added another three as the 'Roos surged ahead 22-14 with 1:29 left before the break. The Mountaineers used a 4-1 run to end the half and make it 23-18 heading into the locker room.

After the Mountaineers pulled to within three at 25-22, the 'Roos used a 17-2 run keyed by 11 points from Riley to push it to a 42-24 game with 9:39 left to play. Schreiner began to chip away and pulled within 12 at 44-32 following a pair of free throws from Bailey Harris with 5:56 left, and the Mountaineers managed to cut the margin to eight at 52-44 with 1:06 left on the clock.

A pair of free throws from Riley made it a 10 point game again at 56-46 with 30 seconds left and the 'Roos would hold off the Mountaineers from there. The 'Roos held Schreiner to just 27.7% shooting overall and a 3-of-22 performance from long range.

Riley finished hitting 8-of-12 shots overall and 5-of-6 from three to get her second straight game of 20 or more points. Kime finished with nine and Stepanski added eight points, six boards, and three blocks.

Lindsey Peterson led Schreiner with 13 and nine rebounds and Olivia Lott chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.

Austin College will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Texas Lutheran at 3:00 p.m.
