McMurry Takes Two From 'Roo Softball
ABILENE, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped both games in its road doubleheader at McMurry University on Sunday afternoon, with the War Hawks edging the 'Roos 7-5 in game one and taking a 9-1 decision in game two. The 'Roos are now 2-26 overall and 2-16 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

ABILENE, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped both games in its road doubleheader at McMurry University on Sunday afternoon, with the War Hawks edging the 'Roos 7-5 in game one and taking a 9-1 decision in game two. The 'Roos are now 2-26 overall and 2-16 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
McMurry got on the board first in the opening game of the twinbill, plating a run in the bottom of the second to grab a 1-0 lead. Austin College countered in the top of the third with an RBI single by Corigan Beaird. The War Hawks brought two runs home in the bottom half of the inning, but once again the 'Roos responded and evened the score in the top of the fourth with a two-run double by Chyrsi Hemby.
After McMurry went back on top 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Austin College took its first lead of the day in the fifth, with Reagan Brinkley singling to score the tying run and Hailie Swiatkowski notching an RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. However, McMurry pushed three runs across in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead, and Austin College was unable to mount a final comeback.
McKinley Hankins took the loss for Austin College, giving up three runs on two hits with two walks in 1.1 innings of relief work, while Emmalee Gebhart got the win in relief for the War Hawks. Swaitkowski and Hemny each went 2-for-3 to pace Austin College at the plate.
In game two, the War Hawks took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and plated three more in the third to boost the lead to 5-0, and after Austin College got a run back in the third when Tori Fowler came around to score, McMurry countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-1. A two-run homer by Mercedes Camacho extended McMurry's lead to 8-1 in the fifth, and the War Hawks got one more run in the sixth to end the game at 9-1.
Brinkley absorbed the loss, giving up six runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings of work, while Mackenzie McClellan went the distance to earn the win for McMurry. Swiatkowsi went 2-for-3 to lead the 'Roos offensively.
