KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Schreiner University on Saturday, as the 'Roos took leads in both games but couldn't hang on with a 5-4 defeat in game one and a 10-2 loss in game two.
Schreiner jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one, and that remained the score until the top of the third when the 'Roos pushed four runs across starting with a solo homer by Hailie Swiatkowski, her second of the season. Tori Fowler followed with an RBI triple and later scored on a double by Reagan Brinkley, and Brinkley came home later in the inning on a double steal to make it 4-1 in favor of the 'Roos.
The Mountaineers got two runs back in the fourth to cut it to 4-3 and squared things up in the fifth, and Abigail Sliman ended things in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off triple to score the winning run and make it a 5-4 game. McKinley Hankins took the loss in relief for Austin College, giving up a run on two hits in 1.1 innings, while Brinkley went 2-for-3 to pace the 'Roos at the plate. Brinley Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Mountaineers.
Game two saw Austin College grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Emily Autrey doubled home Piper Lindlau, and after Schreiner evened things up in the bottom of the third, the 'Roos went on top 2-1 on an RBI single by Chyrsi Hemby in the top of the fifth. However, Schreiner plated six runs in the bottom half of the inning to surge ahead 7-2, and the Mountaineers tacked on three more runs in the sixth to end the game via the run-rule at 10-2.
Brinkley absorbed the loss for the 'Roos, giving up three runs on one hit with one walk issued in 2.0 innings of action, and Autrey went 2-for-2 to lead Austin College offensively. Kourtney Hurry was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Smith had three RBI for Schreiner.
