CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Austin College softball team wrapped up its weekend trip to California with a pair of douleheaders against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, with the first doubleheader beginning Friday but wrapping up on Saturday morning due to darkness the previous evening, leading to a wild Saturday that saw the 'Roos play three matches and some change on Saturday. The 'Roos dropped the opening game to CMS 4-3 in extra innings before falling 12-3 in game two on Saturday morning, and then dropped both halves of its twinbill against the Sagehens by scores of 16-0 and 8-0.
Game one on Friday went into extra innings before the sun went down, leading to the game needing to be finished on Saturday morning with CMS pulling out the 4-3 home win in the bottom of the ninth. Alexus Johnson went 8.0 innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on nine hits and McKinley Hankins absorbed the loss after giving up one unearned run on one hit in 0.1 innings of relief work. Game two against CMS saw the 'Roos allow just one earned run out of the 12 scored for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, as the game was broken open in the fourth when CMS plated 10 runs, helped along by Austin College errors, to surge ahead 12-2. That big inning came after CMS scored twice in the third and Austin College countered with two runs in the top of the fourth, as Piper Lindlau doubled home a pair of runs to tie game game up. After CMS had its big bottom of the fourth, Corigan Beaird scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth but the 'Roos were unable to mount a comeback, falling via the mercy rule after the fifth. Chyrsi Hemby went 2-for-3 to lead the 'Roos and Fowler added another stolen base, while Lauren Trott took the loss after giving up nine runs, only one earned, on three hits with five walks issued in 3.1 innings of work.
Against Pomona-Pitzer, the 'Roos managed just three hits, with Fowler, Johnson, and Hailie Swiatkowski each singling, while Reagan Brinkley took the loss after giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on 10 hits in 2.0 innings of work. Pomona-Pitzer's Devin Waddell went 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, adn four runs scored to pace the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an early lead again in the second game, plating two runs in the first and one in the second to make it 3-0.
