ORANGE, Calif. - The Austin College softball team opened its trip to California with a pair of losses against Chapman, falling 12-2 in game one before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat in game two. The 'Roos are now 0-4 on the year.
In game one, Austin College jumped out to an early lead when Corigan Beaird tripled home Tori Fowler, and Beaird came home on an RBI single from Chyrsi Hemby to make it 2-0 in the top of the first. However, Chapman struck back quickly, plating three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go on top 3-2, and they would erupt for six runs in the second to make it 9-2 heading into the third. Chapman tacked on three more runs in the third, and that's how things would end after five innings of play.
Austin College was limited to three hits, with Beaird, Hemby, and Hannah King each getting on base, while Lauren Trott took the loss after surrendering nine runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits in 1.0 innings of work. Miranda Murphy was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a triple to lead Chapman at the dish.
Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Murphy knocked in an unearned run to put Chapman ahead 1-0, but Austin College evened things up in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from Tessa Contreras, which brought Reagan Brinkley around to score. Chapman scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth, and Austin College was shut down over the final two innings of action.
Brinkley went the distance in the circle to absorb the loss for Austin College, surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 6.0 innings. Brinkley, Contreras, Havannah Holmes, and Macie Johnson each had a hit for the 'Roos, while Rose Malen got the win for Chapman after tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
