'Roo Softball Drops Pair at Sul Ross

ALPINE, Texas - The Austin College softball team fell twice at Sul Ross State University over the weekend as the 'Roos headed across the state for a pair of non-conference games, with the third game of the series canceled due to cold weather conditions. The 'Roos fell 9-7 in game one, before dropping an 11-3 decision in their second game of the weekend.

The 'Roos led for most of game one against the Lobos, getting a pair of runs in the top of the first with Carrie Johnson and Kaitlyn Barrett each coming up with an RBI. Tori Fowler added an RBI single in the second to make it 3-0 before Sul Ross got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. An error opened the door for multiple runs in the third as the 'Roos pushed their lead to 6-2, with Hannah King's RBI double highlighting the scoring.

However, the Lobos would plate three runs in the bottom of the third to cut it to 6-5, and two more runs came across in the fourth to give Sul Ross its first lead of the game, and the margin would grow to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. That remained the score until the seventh, when Lyndsey Busch brought home a run to cut it to a 9-7 game but that's as close as the 'Roos would get as their final-inning comeback came up short. Alexus Johnson took the loss for Austin College, giving up seven runs - five earned - on five hits with six walks in 4.0 innings of work. Chyrsi Hemby and King each had a pair of hits in the loss for the 'Roos.

Barrett put Austin College ahead 1-0 in the top of the first in the team's second game of the weekend, but Sul Ross erupted for six runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back, adding a run in the second to make it a 7-1 game. King had an RBI double in the third and another run came home on an error to make it 7-3, but the Lobos put four more runs across in the sixth to end the game at 11-3.

King and Hailie Swiatkowski each went 2-for-3 in the loss to pace the 'Roos at the dish, with Swiatkowski also going the distance in the circle to absorb the loss after surrendering 11 runs - only six of which were earned - on 12 hits.
