'Roos Fall in Slugfest at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College softball team opened up its weekend series at Schreiner University with an 18-10 defeat on Friday evening in Kerrville.

Errors opened the door for three Austin College runs in the opening frame, but the Mountaineers responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first to make it a 4-3 game. Schreiner would add two more runs in the second and one more in the third to make it 7-3, and the Mountaineers would push five more runs across in the fourth to make it a 12-3 margin. 

Austin College rallied back in the top of the fifth, exploding for seven runs in the frame to trim it to a 12-10 game. An error got things started with Brooklynn Cook coming home, and Kalee Rush would knock home the next run. Yet another error opened the door for a run scored by Faith Butler, with Tessa Contreras following up with an RBI single. Cook would draw a bases loaded walk during her second trip to the plate in the inning, and Carrie Johnson capped the scoring with a two-run single.

However, the Mountaineers responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 17-10 game, and one more run would cross in the sixth to make it an 18-10 final after six innings. Nine different players each had a hit for the 'Roos, while Danielle Pedraza went 6-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, and eight RBI to pace Schreiner. AD Smith absorbed the loss for the 'Roos, giving up six runs on seven hits in an inning of work.
