Austin College Softball Splits with Eureka

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team split its home doubleheader against Eureka College on Wednesday evening, falling 5-2 in game one before winning via the run-rule in a 15-5 decision in game two. The 'Roos are now 4-6 overall on the year.

In game one, the 'Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a 2-run homer by Chyrsi Hemby, but Eureka's Farrah Michaels plated a pair of runs in the top of the second to even things up. The scored remained 2-2 until the sixth, when the Red Devils brought home what would prove to be the winning runs on a 2-run single by KayLee Holhbauch to make it 4-2, and another run would come home in the inning to make it a 5-2 game. Austin College was unable to counter in the team's two final trips to the plate.

Hailie Swiatkowski took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Hemby went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, and Elizabeth Preston went 2-for-4 with a double. Tatum Trotter got the win for Eureka, giving up two runs on 10 hits in a complete game performance.

Carrie Johnson doubled home a pair of runs to put Austin College on top 2-0 after the first inning of game two, and after Eureka got a run back in the top of the second on a home run by Bria Wessel, the 'Roos plated eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to surge ahead 10-1. Avery Atencio, Preson, Tessa Contreras, Hemby, and Johnson each brought one run home, and Kaitlyn Barrett blasted a 3-run homer to cap off the big inning for Austin College.

Eureka got three runs back in the third to cut it to a 10-4 game, but Atencio brought home another run and Barrett scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-4 in the fourth, and Contreras and Hemby each drew bases loaded walks in that same inning to make it 14-4. Faith Butler capped off the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single, making it a 15-4 game. The Red Devils got one run back in the top of the fifth, but that's as close as things would get.

AD Smith got the win for Austin College, giving up four runs - only two earned - on eight hits in 4.0 innings of action, while Johnson went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Preston went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Barrett and Hemby were also 2-for-3 with three and two runs batted in, respectively.
