'Roos Drop Pair to Open 2023

JACKSON, Miss. - The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its season-opening doubleheader at Millsaps on Friday, falling 10-3 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

In game one, the 'Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Chyrsi Hemby to plate Elizabeth Preston, but the Majors countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Preston brought home a run on a sacrifice fly and Hailie Swiatkowski scored in the top of the second to put Austin College back on top 3-2, but Millsaps squared things up in the bottom of the second and went on top for good with a run in the third to make it 4-3. The Majors added four more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to put the game away and make it a 10-3 final.

Hemby went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the 'Roos offensively, while Allie Jeter took the loss in the circle for Austin College, surrendering five runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. Alli Nolan and Brianna Newman each had three hits to pace the Majors.

Millsaps took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two and pushed the margin to 4-0 with a three run third before Carrie Johnson got the 'Roos on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. Brooklynn Cook added a run-scoring single of her own in the fifth to cut it to a 4-2 deficit, but the Majors added a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 6-2 and Austin College was unable to mount ac omeback in the final two innings.

AD Smith absorbed the loss for Austin College, giving up our runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of action, while five different 'Roos had one hit apiece. Johnson went 1-for-3 and Cook went 1-for-2 for Austin College. Katie Norris went 3-for-4 to lead Millsaps. Austin College and the Majors will match up for another doubleheader on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
