'Roos Split with Hendrix

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader against Hendrix College on Sunday, taking game one 12-11 on a walk-off hit before falling 11-4 in game two. The 'Roos are now 2-6 on the year.

In game one, Hendrix jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before Austin College got one back on an RBI base hit by Lizzy Preston in the bottom half of the inning. The Warriors added two more runs in the second to make it 4-1, and the lead grew to 5-1 in the top of the third. The 'Roos plated a run on an error in the bottom of the third, and two more came across in the fourth to trim it to a 5-4 game.

After the Warriors scored once in the fifth, Austin College tied things up in the bottom of the fifth but Hendrix pushed three runs across in the sixth to make it a 9-6 game. Austin College got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 9-8, but Hendrix scored twice more in the seventh to go on top 11-8. Joli Kirkpatrick got the rally started in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double, and Preston added an RBI before Avery Atencio brought home the winning run to give the 'Roos a 12-11 victory.

Karsen Lampkin got the win in relief, and Kirkpatrick went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored and Preston also went 3-for-5 in the win.

Hendrix jumped out to an early lead in game two, plating three runs in the top of the first and after Austin College got one run back in the bottom of the inning, the Warriors exploded for eight runs in the second to make it an 11-1 game. Austin College pushed two runs across to cut it to 11-3 after two innings, and the 'Roos added one more in the fifth to make it 11-4 but that's as close as things would get.

Aubri Dayle Smith took the loss for Austin College, while the 'Roos were held to three hits in the loss.
