Celts Hand 'Roos Pair of Defeats

HOUSTON, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader on Sunday, falling 11-3 in game one before being dropping a 7-3 decision in game two. The 'Roos are now 2-20 overall and 1-16 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Celts plated five runs in the second inning and added four more in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the fourth. Austin College got on the board in the top of the fourth when Avery Atencio doubled home two runs, plating Ashley Elliott and Elizabeth Preston. St. Thomas added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 11-2 before the 'Roos got one more run on a Sarah Ramirez homer to make it an 11-3 final after five innings.

Four different players had a hit apiece for Austin College, with Jaide Vidal, Ramirez, Preston, and Atencio each picking up a hit. Hannah Richendollar took the loss for Austin College, surrendering eight runs - seven earned - on six hits in 2.0 innings of work.

In game two, the 'Roos jumped on top early when Vidal came home on an error to make it 1-0, and after St. Thomas scored to even things up in the bottom half of the inning, Austin College took the lead back in the second on an RBI single from Vidal that plated Alice Maisonet. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Celts pushed four runs across to make it a 5-2 game. Vidal scored on another error in the fifth to cut it to a 5-3 deficit, but UST added two more runs in the sixth to make it 7-3 and the 'Roos were unable to counter in the seventh.

Vidal went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead Austin College offensively, while Karsen Lampkin absorbed the loss after going the distance in the circle. Lampkin gave up seven runs - four earned - on 12 hits with a strikeout and no walks issued.
