Rally Falls Short for 'Roo Softball

SHERMAN, Texas - After trailing 9-0 in the middle of the fourth, the Austin College softball team exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning to pull to with two but could not quite close the gap in a 16-8 loss to Trinity University on Saturday morning. The 'Roos are now 2-12 overall and 1-10 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Trinity plated five runs in the first inning to take a big early lead, and the Tigers would add one more run in the third and three in the fourth to go ahead by nine runs. However, in the bottom of the fourth the 'Roos got on the board when Elizabeth Preston came home on a wild pitch, and Avery Atencio plated another with an RBI single. Karsen Lampkin belted a two run homer, and Sarah Ramirez added a three run shot of her own to make it 9-7 heading into the fifth.

However, the Tigers would respond with three runs in the inning to go on top 12-7, and four more runs would cross in the sixth to push it to a 16-7 advantage. Austin College added one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Jaide Vidal scored on an error but that's as close as things would get.

Ashley Elliott took the loss for Austin College after giving up nine runs - five earned - on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Vidal went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the 'Roos, and five more players had one hit apiece in defeat.
