'Roo Softball Takes One of Two at UD

IRVING, Texas - The Austin College softball team finished up its weekend series with the University of Dallas with a win and a loss on Sunday, ending the series going 2-2 against the Crusaders. The 'Roos fell 4-3 in the first game and picked up a 12-6 win in game two on Sunday.

Austin College, which moves to 2-6 overall this season with Sunday's split, got on the board first in the opening game with an RBI from Sarah Ramirez in the top of the first. Dallas answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-1, but Ramirez knocked in another run and Avery Atencio drove in Andrea Saucedo in the third to put the 'Roos back on top 3-2. The Crusaders pushed the tying run across in the fifth, and a defensive error opened the door for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, giving Dallas a 4-3 win.

Hannah Richendollar took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs, three earned, on eight hits in a complete game performance. Elizabeth Preston went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for Austin College, while Dallas was led by Brenna Kelly, who went 3-for-3 at the plate.

The 'Roos once again jumped out to an early lead in game two, with a double steal scoring Ramirez in the top of the first. The Crusaders squared things up in the bottom half of the inning and scored another in the second to go on top 2-1, but Preston tripled home a run and Ashley Elliott drove in another to make it 3-2 with the 'Roos on top. Dallas regained the lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Liz Cordova to make it 4-3, but Elliott knocked in a run in the fifth to square things up.

The 'Roos erupted for four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to surge to a 12-4 lead, with Dallas scoring two runs in the final frame to make it a 12-6 final. Jaide Vidal, Ramirez, Alice Maisonet, and Preston each brought home a run in the sixth, and Atencio got the scoring started in the seventh with an RBI triple. Maisonet and Preston each tacked on an RBI in the inning to get the 'Roos to a dozen runs.

Maisonet picked up the win in relief, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Ramirez went 3-for-4 and Preston went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Vidal and Atencio each had two hits in the victory.
