Austin College Splits on Day One of Millsaps Invitational

JACKSON, Miss. - The Austin College softball team split its two games on day one of the Millsaps Invitational, falling 9-2 against Mississippi University for Women before bouncing back with a 4-2 victory against LaGrange. The 'Roos are now 3-7 overall on the year.

Against Mississippi University for Women, the 'Roos fell behind 3-0 after the first and the margin grew to 4-0 heading into the third, but Jaide Vidal scored on a passed ball and Sarah Ramirez doubled home a run in the third to cut it to a 4-2 game. However, Mississippi University for Women answered right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, and two more came across in the fourth to make it 8-2. One more run would cross the plate in the sixth to make it a 9-2 final.

Jordan Proctor took the loss for Austin College after surrendering eight runs - only three earned - on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work. Vidal went 2-for-4 at the dish to lead Austin College offensively, adding a stolen base on the day as well.

The second game of the day remained scoreless until the third, when LaGrange pushed one run across to go on top 1-0, but the 'Roos erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead and would not look back the rest of the way. Aubri Dayle Smith got the scoring started with an RBI base hit, and Taylor Levan knocked in a run to put the 'Roos ahead. Marisa Duke doubled home a run, and Vidal brought home the fourth run of the inning. LaGrange would tack on one run in the sixth but Hannah Richendollar shut the door in the seventh after coming on in relief.

Reina Serrano got the win after giving up two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work, while Duke and Caitlin Nagy each went 2-for-3 to pace the 'Roos at the plate.
