Jarvis Christian Takes Two from 'Roos

SHERMAN, Texas –The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader on Thursday evening against Jarvis Christian College, falling 2-0 in game one before giving up a late lead in a 10-8 game two defeat. The 'Roos are now 0-7 overall on the year.

In game one, it was a defensive battle through the first five innings, but Jarvis Christian finally broke through in the top of the sixth, plating both of its runs in that frame. Riah Nunley drove in what would prove to be the game winner, and Gabriella Omichi brought home another run to make it 2-0, and that's how things would end.

Marisa Duke was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the 'Roos, who collected six hits as a team in the game. Taylor Groover absorbed the loss, going the distance in the circle and surrendering two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs struck early in game two, plating a run in the top of the first but Austin College was able to even things up in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Mayorga. Jarvis Christian pushed three runs across in the third to take a 4-1 lead, but Austin College exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to go on top 8-4.

Cassidy McDaris doubled home a run and later scored on a double steal, and Duke brought home another run with a single. Mayorga drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie things up, and an error opened the door for two more runs to put the 'Roos ahead 6-4. Two more runs would come across in the inning to give Austin College a four-run cushion.

Jarvis Christian got one run back in the fifth to cut it to an 8-5 game, and the Bulldogs plated four more runs in the sixth to grab a 9-8 lead. A throwing error by the 'Roos in the seventh led to one ore run, and Austin College went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

McDaris finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Jaide Vidal went 2-for-4 to pace the 'Roos at the plate. Ashley Elliott took the loss, coming on in relief and surrendering five runs – two earned – on five hits with four walks in 3.1 innings of work.

Austin College will look to bounce back with another home doubleheader on Saturday, as the 'Roos take on Hendrix College beginning at 12:00 p.m.
