'Roos Drop Two to Open Season

ABILENE, Texas - The Austin College softball team dropped its first two games of the 2019 season on Friday, falling 9-1 to McMurry and 12-3 to Hardin-Simmons. The 'Roos will be looking to bounce back on Saturday as they take on Millsaps in the morning and follow that up with another game against McMurry.

McMurry used a pair of four-run innings to hand the 'Roos a loss in the season opener, plating four in the second and four more in the fifth to end the game. The War Hawks got on the board with a run in the first before their big second inning that made it 5-0. Austin College got on the scoreboard in the third, as Mari Prazak drove in Cassidy McDaris with an RBI single. McDaris finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, as Austin College was limited to three hits as a team. Jordan Proctor took the loss for Austin College, surrending nine runs on 10 hits.

Against Hardin-Simmons, the game was scoreless until the top of the third, when HSU put three runs across. Four more runs came home for Hardin-Simmons in the fifth, and two more runners scored in the sixth to make it 9-0. Austin College plated three in the bottom of the sixth, with Ashley Elliott driving in one run and Ashley Mayorga doubling home two more to cut it to a 9-3 game. However, the Cowgirls would get three more runs in the seventh to make it a 12-3 final.

McDaris once again went 2-for-3 to lead the 'Roos offensively, and Mayorga finiished 1-for-3. Taylor Groover absorbed the loss, giving up seven runs - four earned - on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work.
