Mountaineers Topple 'Roos in SCAC Doubleheader

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Schreiner on Saturday, falling 3-2 in game one and 13-5 in game two. The 'Roos are now 4-26 overall on the season and 1-15 in conference play.

The teams took a scoreless game into the third inning of game one, wish Ashley Mayorga putting Austin College on the board first with an RBI single. The 'Roo lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth, but Schreiner cut it to a 2-1 game in the bottom half of the inning and completed their comeback with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Kat Wright took the loss for Austin College, surrendering three runs on six hits in a complete game performance. Mayorga, Cassidy McDaris, and Emily Low each had two hits for the 'Roos.

Austin College jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning of game two, with Mayorga bringing home the run on a ground ball, but Schreiner knotted things in the bottom of the inning. Two more runs came home for Austin College in the third, with Wright doubling home a run while Courtney Gonzales drew a walk with the bases loaded to put the 'Roos ahead 3-1. However, the Mountaineers would plate five runs in the bottom of the inning to go on top 6-3.

Mayorga doubled home a run and McDaris added an RBI single in the fourth to cut it to a 6-5 game, but Schreiner would outscore the 'Roos 7-0 the rest of the way, including five runs in the sixth to make it a 13-5 final. Tori Herrera surrended seven runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings of work with five strikeouts to absorb the loss. Low went 3-for-3, and McDaris finished 2-for-3.
