'Roo Softball Falls Twice to No. 13 Texas Lutheran

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader against No. 13-ranked Texas Lutheran on Friday, falling 11-5 in game one and 4-0 in game two. The 'Roos are now 5-3 overall and 0-2 in SCAC play.

Texas Lutheran took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second before Austin College put four runs across in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 4-2, with Mary Whitworth drawing a bases loaded walk, Delaney England doubling home two runs, and Briana Hernandez adding an RBI double in the inning.

The lead grew to 5-2 on a throwing error in the third, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the fifth to cut it to a 5-4 lead, and after tying things up in the sixth, TLU also got a three-run homer in that inning from Kaymee Gooden to go ahead 8-5. Another homer in the seventh for TLU was followed by two more runs coming home on a two errors to make it an 11-5 final.

Tori Herrera took the loss for the 'Roos, surrendering 11 runs – eight earned – on 15 hits in a complete game performance. England finished 1-for-3 to lead the 'Roos, who were limited to three hits in the game.

In game two, the 'Roos were once again held to just three hits and Texas Lutheran plated runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead, with two more runs coming across in the sixth to make it a 4-0 game. Austin College was unable to get any offense going down the stretch in the shutout loss.

Sophia Hernandez absorbed the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work. Raquel Vara, Emily Low, and Chelsea Easley each had a hit for Austin College.

The 'Roos will be looking to bounce back tomorrow when they host TLU for another doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
