'Roo Softball Opens 2016 with Doubleheader Sweep

The Austin College softball team kicked off the new season with a pair of victories on the road against Southwestern Assemblies of God, winning 7-5 in game one before taking a 9-3 game two victory.

In game one, the 'Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two with a run in each of the first two innings, but SAGU came back to square things in the bottom of the third. The 'Roos erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 7-2, with Briana Hernandez ripping a three run double to key the big inning.

SAGU would plate three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Sophia Hernandez came on in relief to close the door and allow Austin College to hold on for the win. Tori Herrera had nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work to earn the victory in the circle.

Briana Hernandez finished 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Delaney England went 2-for-3 and scored two runs while driving in another. Sophia Hernandez and Emily Low each went 2-for-4 in the victory.

In game two, SAGU took a 1-0 lead after two innings before the 'Roos plated two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and four runs in the fifth to go on top 9-1. Sophia Hernandez knocked a two run single in the big fifth inning, with Lauren Mara and Kierra Gaither each driving in a run as well.

SAGU got one run back in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 9-3, but that's as close as the Lions would get. Katherine Wright got the win for Austin College, surrendering three runs, only one earned, on nine hits while tossing a complete game.

Sophia Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Low went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in the win.
