'Roo Softball Finishes Weekend Series with Split

The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with Schreiner Saturday morning, falling 12-2 in game one before bouncing back with a 13-3 victory in game two. The 'Roos are now 9-10 overall and 2-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the split.

The 'Roos fell behind 1-0 after one in the first game of the doubleheader, and Schreiner took advantage of a second inning error to score three more and make it 4-0 after two complete. That remained the score until the bottom of the fourth when Lacy Price belted a two run homer to make it 4-2, but once again an error opened the door to a big inning in the fifth as the Mountaineers plated four more runs to make it 8-2.

The 'Roos were unable to get any offense going in the late innings, while Schreiner put four more runs across in the sixth to make it 12-2 and end the game via the run rule. Austin College managed just three hits in the game, and Victoria Herrera took the loss after surrendering 12 runs, only four earned, on 14 hits in 6.0 innings of work.

In game two, the once again jumped on top in the first with three unearned runs coming home to make it 3-0, but that would be the only scoring that Schreiner would do as the 'Roos took control starting in the third inning when five runs came home to make it a 5-3 Austin College advantage.

Sophia Hernandez got things started with a three run homer to tie things up, and Price and Ali Carnes each singled home a run in the inning. Another Austin College run came home in the fourth when Hernandez singled in another run, and in the fifth inning both Price and Mary Whitworth hit solo homers to push it to an 8-3 lead.

The 'Roos ended the game in the sixth inning via the run rule after Price singled home two more runs, and with two runners on, Whitworth blasted her second homer of the game to make it a 13-3 final. Hernandez picked up the win, going the distance while allowing three unearned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Price finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and Briana Hernandez went 3-for-4, while Sophia Hernandez went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Whitworth finished 2-for-4 with four RBI in the victory.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
