'Roo Softball Splits with Howard Payne

The Austin College softball team earned its first victory of the season as the 'Roos split their twin bill with Howard Payne on Sunday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 1-2 overall this season.

In game one, the 'Roos fell behind 1-0 after three innings before Haley Clendennen blasted a two run homer in the fourth to make it 2-1 in favor of Austin College, and that remained the score until the bottom of the seventh when Howard Payne took advantage of an error to get a walk off victory on an errant throw.

Clendennen finished 2-for-3 and Taylor Steelman, Briana Hernandez, and Rachel Ramos each had a hit as the 'Roos were limited to five for the game. Victoria Herrera went the distance on the mound, surrendering three runs, two earned, on just four hits with six strikeouts in her collegiate debut.

The 'Roos responded in a big way in game two, plating two runs in the top of the first and adding three more in the fifth highlighted by a two run double by Clendennen to make it 5-0. The 'Roos would add three more runs in the seventh with Clendennen adding another RBI and two more runs coming home on errors to make it an 8-0 final.

Briana Hernandez went 3-for-3 and Sophia Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a double, and each sister notched an RBI. Clendennen finished the game going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophia Hernandez also earned the shutout victory, tossing a complete game five hitter with a pair of strikeouts.
