ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Austin College men's water polo team opened up the 2019 campaign with a pair of losses to perennial Division III power Johns Hopkins and Division I opponent La Salle on Saturday. The 'Roos fell 15-10 to Johns Hopkins before being edged 14-11 by La Salle.

Against No. 8-ranked Johns Hopkins, the 'Roos jumped out to a 3-1 lead with goals from Alex Rodriguez, Evan Cueva, and Max Wade. Johns Hopkins would score three unanswered, however, to take a 4-3 lead after the first quarter. The margin grew to 7-3 in the second before the 'Roos got goals from Brett Skinner and Wade to make it 10-5 at halftime. The 'Roos notched three goals in the third to cut it to a 12-8 game, but Austin College was unable to get the deficit down under four goals the rest of the way. Wade paced Austin College with four goals and Cueva had two in the loss.

In the team's second game of the day against La Salle, the 'Roos sprinted out to an early 3-0 lead, and would eventually take a 6-4 lead into halftime. La Salle would respond with four straight goals to open the third quarter and take its first lead of the game at 8-6, but Austin College rallied and squared things up at 9-9 heading into the fourth. La Salle opened the fourth with a pair of goals to make it 11-9, and after the 'Roos trimmed it to a 12-11 game with four and a half minutes to play, La Salle netted two more to make it a 14-11 final. Wade once again led Austin College with three goals, while Robert Griffin and Skinner each had two.
